Glenn's Books Reviews

Jane Griffin

Sports Dietitian (UK), author of Nutrition for Marathon Running

Review

This book has really helped athletes. It is good to know that the practical advice is backed by science. There are so many books out there and many just don’t make sense and you wonder if the author has ever actually worked with sportspeople. On reading this book there is certainly no doubt that the author knows his science and has worked with a wide range and an enormous number of sportsmen and women. Very importantly for me he writes in an amusing readable way. Right on the first page he suggests eating lots of things including “reduced-fat dairy foods (except Camembert and premium ice cream because they taste the best with the fat left in!)”. The book never became like a textbook for me and the cartoon illustrations and various facts (some relevant, some just funny) that are dotted throughout kept my interest and often made me laugh out loud. Each chapter ends with a “Final Score” – basically a summary of the chapter but much more fun. Anybody wanting to make sure they are eating to get maximum out of their training and optimize performance should get out there and buy a copy of Gold Medal Nutrition. And don’t lend your copy to anybody else, just tell them to buy their own!

Gold Medal Nutrition is not a textbook but an entertaining and practical book based on sound scientific principles. You will find out lots of ways you can change your diet to optimize your performance in training and competition but you will also really enjoy reading this book and probably laugh out loud too.

Review

Athletes, coaches and anyone involved with sport will appreciate this reader-friendly, informative and entertaining publication, packed with state-of-the-art sports nutrition information. As an athlete I don't have time to research the latest scientific journals for up-to-the-minute sports nutrition info and found this book provided the answers to my questions. It addresses the nutrition and physiology basics which are essential but its real value to athletes lies in the great practical tips which help to put the theory into real life situations. Glenn obviously has a wealth of experience dealing with athletes from a wide range of sports and his background as a Sports Dietitian gives him the ability to provide practical suggestions which really work!

The range of topics covered is extensive but Glenn has put the book together in a way that allows easy retrieval of the vital messages. I find the ready reference tables particularly useful and continue to be entertained by the smattering of humour mixed with athlete quotes. Thanks Glenn for another great book to help me keep my knowledge up to date and my body in the best shape to achieve another Gold Medal Performance.

Gold Medal Nutrition is a truly fascinating read! Filled with state-of-the-art sports nutrition information, Glenn has managed to remove the scientific jargon without eliminating the critical information. Entertaining the author while they learn is a truly unique talent that Glenn possess'. He brings sports nutrition to life.

One of the most valuable things about the work of Glenn Cardwell is his ability to convey complex sports nutrition ideas in a manner we all understand, from the novice to the highly qualified Sports Dietitian. He has a wonderful ability to put things into context and links to issues to history and current practice. Glenn uses his vast and extensive involvement with many different sports and athletes to illustrate the points and topics along with well placed cartoons reinforcing his excellent sense of humour in exactly the right place. The cartoons enhance the topic under discussion. Gold Medal Nutrition is about sports nutrition for sports performance.

This book is divided into three parts. Part One discusses fuel systems and general eating patterns to provide the basis for building future sports nutrition knowledge and information, including the role of protein, carbohydrates, glycaemic index, minerals and fluids in sports performance. The section on the individual amino acid content in selected foods is one of my favourite tables; I find myself frequently returning to Gold Medal Nutrition for reference.

Part Two focuses on practical aspects of sports nutrition such as digestion, eating before, during and after activity, supplements, shopping and food labels. This section contains a number of tables for quick and easy reference. The dining-out guide is a must-read for all athletes.

Part Three covers weight management including weight gain and weight loss. Information here is presented in bite-sized pieces, allowing the reader to dip in and out of the various sections. Several recipes are included for smoothies and energy shakes.

The book finishes with an excellent and extensive table on the nutrient value of common foods, takeaway meals, and items for protein, fat, carbohydrate and total energy. The list of resources and websites will be helpful for those wishing to find further information on the topic of sports nutrition.

Gold Medal Nutrition is for athletes, especially those who are keen to improve their performance, and should be considered required reading. This book is a must for any student studying sport nutrition at any level and is an ideal resource for new and seasoned sports dietitians and sports nutritionists looking for refreshing ways to present information at seminars and when writing articles. This book is recommended for anyone with a keen interest in sports nutrition.
